CMS teachers closer to 2 percent raise

Charlotte-Mecklenburg teachers are one step closer to getting a raise.

County commissioners Wednesday night approved an $18.5 million budget for CMS raises.

The county has a $44 million surplus in next year’s budget. The county manager suggested a property tax cut of about $50 per year, but teachers rallied for a 2 percent raise, saying they have not had one in four years.

The board also approved funding for ImaginOn, CPCC and other programs.

Speeding car in YouTube video was Secret Service employee, agency says

A man recording a speeding car on Interstate 77 on Sunday had no idea his video, after being posted to YouTube, would lead to a Secret Service employee being placed on administrative leave.

“He’s going 85 mph in a 55 with no lights on,” said the man following what he thought was an unmarked police car down the interstate over the holiday weekend.

He recorded several minutes of the driver’s erratic behavior, following the Secret Service employee off the interstate and into a residential area.

At times, speeds were close to 90 mph, the man’s speedometer showed.

The person driving the unmarked car flashed his blue lights, as though the Secret Service employee was forcing an SUV to pull over.

“Now he’s pulling the guy over. I don’t know if you saw that. He got in front of the guy and slammed on his brakes,” the man who recorded the video said.

After seeing the video, the Secret Service placed the employee on administrative leave. Officials said he was on duty at the time of the incident.

Sources said the employee should have just pulled the vehicle over, instead of pulling in front of the SUV.

A second video showed the narrator following the Secret Service employee on to Providence Road West, where the narrator said the employee sped up again.

“He just crossed over the double yellow line to get around someone. Look, there’s a guy cutting grass. He swooped across him, crossing double road lines,” the narrator said. “It’s 35 (mph). I’m going 55, and he’s blowing away from me. He must be going 90 mph.”

The driver stopped following the car after it slowed down to turn into a subdivision.

Sources said the Secret Service employee’s actions would have been explained if the driver had captured the actions of the cars minutes before the video started.

The employee has not been identified by the Secret Service, nor have officials said what that person does for the agency.

The person who recorded the video has not responded to requests for comment on the incident.

Police also stressed that people should not go over the speed limit to follow a speeding vehicle.
